THE NATIONAL HOLIDAY OF THE KUWAIT

On Monday, February 26th at 08:00 all the community of Polish Naval Academy participated in the solemn appeal to honor the National Day of Kuwait. National flags of Kuwait and Polish Republic were upraised, state hymns were played and the occasional order was read. The National Holiday of Independence is celebrated February the 25th in Kuwait. Having the opportunity, we want to drew some historical line about the country.

From the VII century the terrains of the present-day Kuwait were in between borders of the arabian-moslem califate. In XVIII century fugitives from the terrains of the present-day Saudi Arabia founded the Kuwait city. Kuwait was the protectorate of Great Britain in 1899 – 1961. After 1961 Kuwaiti started to implement local rights and taking over the power from British hands. On June 19th 1961 the country signed an arrangement with Great Britain resulted in receiving independence and military guarantees.

On August the 2nd 1990 Kuwait was invaded, conquered and included into Iraq as another province. The power returned in Kuwaiti hands less than year later, 25 February 1991, after the intervention of the international coalition under the lead of the United States during he Desert Storm operation. Poland took the part in the operation: ORP „WODNIK” (training ship) was participating in the mission as a hospital ship and ORP „PIAST” was a rescue ship.
The National Day is to honor the operation.

Polish Naval Academy is celebrating the Kuwaiti National Day for the third year.
